Yesterday on the Feast of St. Stephen, a new soul was received into the household of God.

CSB was baptized as Heart Of My Heart and I stood with C's mother J, as his godparents.  As the two women before me began to gush over the commitment they were making to both God and this tiny child, I stepped back, one to escape "the splash zone", but more importantly, to see the 'larger picture' of this event we were participating in and the pledge we were making.

How profound to have welcomed the Christ Child the day before, knowing the whole story of who, what and why he was, and not only the beginning at the manger.  Contrasting that against the beginning of this newly baptized life at this fount, in this place, at this time, not knowing what the many chapters of his life will tell us and the world.  It should be a joy to behold!

Later, as I held C, cradling his tiny head with one hand, and his body in the other, I was suddenly filled with amazement and awe at God's creation.  A man had sown a seed, it became something that grew and multiplied within the mother, then at birth this tiny presence emerged, later to be washed and welcomed into the Church of God.  So much of his life is ahead of him, and I hope to have a role in that.  Only through God's Grace.

I pray regularly for the Almighty's gracious love and mercy to assist and guide me in my responsibilities to the many godchildren I have stood for.  For those and now for CS, I will strive to be present to and for them, that they may all be brought up in the Christian faith and life, and that through our prayers and witness, we may help them all to grow into the full stature of Christ.

Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your SonJesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service,  Renew in this your servant, CS, the covenant you made with him at his Baptism.  Send him forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before him; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
