Fire

Each day at the Washington Hospital Center, we begin with prayer and reflection in chapel.  One of my VTS buddies led worship this morning using the theme, "The Sacred Space Within."  The central reflection revolved around Fire.  He shared this poem by Judy Brown:

   What makes a fire burn
                              is space between the logs,
                              a breathing space.

Too much of a good thing,
too many logs packed in too tight
can douse the flames almost as surely
as a pail of water would.

                              So building fires requires attention
to the spaces in between, as much as to the wood.

When we are able to build open spaces
in the same way we have learned
                              to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
                              together, that make fire possible.

We need only to lay a log
                              lightly from time to time.

                              A fire grows
simply because the space is there,
with openings in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
                              can find its way.

What is the fuel in your life?

        What do you consume?

                What consumes you?

                          How is you energy spent?

I hope and pray we each may know the fire which burns within us, the spark from which that fire springs, and the beacon that each and every one of us might be, one to another.  Let your light so shine that all may see the good works begun in you as blessings from above.  Fire up!  Shine on!  Rock on!
