Good Friday

A 'tradition' in this household on Good Friday is to listen to or watch "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the afternoon or evening.  Since Heart Of My Heart is a prominent participant at the 6 p.m. Children's Services, we are very flexible as to when and how we do this.  Tonight we are doing film.  In fact, as I type, Judas' torment has begun ("Damned for All Time") and it's 10:30 p.m. at night.

Of course, the film "Jesus Christ Superstar" directed by Norman Jewison in the early 1970s seems to fit in more with today's music video genre than it did over thirty-five years ago.  But while the music is something we remember and enjoy, the visual element of the film is most compelling.  It is timeless, and after a series of liturgies throughout this day, we know the story very well.  Of course, seeing the places where they made this movie, we want to go there.  (It was filmed primarily in Advat located on a mountain in the Negev desert between Petra and Eilat.)

This is a beautiful film, and if you haven't seen it, I fully recommend it.  You probably won't want to watch it with us because we sing along.  But it provides a different way to see and hear the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John.

So why do we call it "Good" when it commemorates the day Jesus Christ died on the hard wood of the cross?

Jesus was born, made incarnate in the flesh, becoming fully human and fully divine.  Because He came to us, from God the Father, Jesus went forth for us.  All of us.  This Son of Man and the only Son of God, who was misunderstood and ultimately betrayed, took all of our sins upon himself and carried a cross up to Calvary.  For all of our sins: yesterday's, today's, and the sins from all our tomorrows.  Jesus carried them all for us to Golgotha so that through His mighty sacrifice and God's work on that cross, salvation was forever won for us.  I can attest that because of Jesus Christ, I know life, and I know it more abundantly.  Jesus is my Lord and Savior.  I know it now here in this life, and expect to fully realize it also in that life which is yet to come.  Eternally and for all time, I am His.  He won that life which is everlasting for all of us if only we would believe in Him.

Today was hard.  But it is Good.  Jesus loved us and we know Him.  We receive and acknowledge His sacrifice for us.  And He saves us.  Thanks be to God!
