It's Scary Sometimes ...

This morning's OT reading ended with:  "And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel."   (1 Sam. 15: 35b)

Having acted in response to the will of the people rather than following the Lord and obeying his commands has gotten Saul in a lot of trouble.  Samuel had told Saul the Lord commanded Saul to utterly destroy the sinning Amalekites and everything they had with them.  But ultimately, Saul chose to spare the Amalekite king and took the best of the spoils from the conquest, including sheep, cattle, fatlings and lambs.  This was the gall of Saul.  Not exactly the marching orders he had been given.

This is one of those lessons to be learned over and over again throughout the passage of time.  Here it is Saul's turn ...

 ... then something weird happened.

Uh, ... permit me, please, ... to invoke a pop culture reference from the movie 'Bull Durham'.

It occurs during an 'out back the bar' confrontation between a veteran minor league catcher named "Crash" Davis who's been signed to break in and groom the ball club's latest highly touted pitching prospect - his name is Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh.  After Crash dares Nuke to hit him in the chest with a baseball, the young brash pitcher throws wildly and misses badly, breaking a window instead.  When he charges his catcher, Nuke is dropped by Crash with one punch. Crash says,  "You just got lesson number one: don't think; it can only hurt the ball club."

Later, after a number of similar lessons, "Nuke" says to himself as he winds up to throw:  "Don't Think.  Just Throw. Don't think, just throw."

There ya go thinking again, Saul.  And it got you in trouble.

It's kinda scary sometimes how my mind operates.  I fully hope, pray and expect that seminary will knock most, if not all, of this nonsense out of my head before I'm ever called into a pulpit to preach.  But I hope there can be some fun in all of it too.

Almighty Father, your Seeking Servant prays for guidance.

I agree with C I think the useless trivia that we all keep is for a later purpose. Cherish it! T
