Following chapel meditations this morning, our CPE Supervisor advised the group two young Roman Catholic interns decided to withdraw from the Summer Unit with five weeks remaining. One had led worship last Thursday afternoon which was decidedly less-than-interfaith, drawing the ire of most in the group at their apparent inability and/or unwillingness to attempt to steer clear of church faith tradition, dogma and theology to be more expansive and inclusive. The other may have struggled in understanding and acting upon their pastoral presence and authority in the trauma arena known as MedSTAR at the Washington Hospital Center. When neither one expressed interest in arranging travel plans to attend the weekend CPE cookout, and later were no-shows, I was concerned some form of damage had been wrought. But not to the extent the two felt it so untenable that they needed to leave the program early. I hope we'll hear more regarding what and why they felt led to ditch now because the group will have to process this further. There's learning in all this. At this point, I just feel we are diminished by their leaving. I pray they know peace and healing.
