Sacred Gift: Devout Sayings

I received another wonderful treasure from my good friend, Jay.  It is a tiny booklet called "Sacred Gift" that contains devout and useful sayings.  Here's the Preface :

"The whole of this collection is principally intended for the benefit of private families, and for those Christians who desire to have their hearts warmed with a sense of religion (the necessity of which every true Christian often feels, and of the want of which he often complains), and who are not well able to purchase larger treatises.  And if, by the blessing of Almighty God, these gleanings (of that field from whence we might have expected a larger harvest) may be subservient to the cause of real religion, and promote a spirit of true piety,-- inward as well as outward holiness,-- I shall have reason to be thankful, and shall think my pains of collecting and publishing them well bestowed."
     -- G.W. Cottrell, Boston, Ma.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1851, by J.Q. Preble, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts.

Here are some morsels to enjoy:

"It signifies nothing to say we will not change our religion, if our religion change not us."

"Do the Lord's work in the Lord's time: pray whilst God hears; hear whilst God speaks; believe whilst God promises; obey wilst God commands."

"The service of God is the soul's work; and the favor of God is its reward."

"There is joy in God's gracious presence, but in his glorious presence there is fulness of joy."

"Love begets love.  It is a flame that communicates itself.  They that have much forgiven them, much done for them, much laid out for them, much laid up for them, will love much."

"The love of Christ is stronger than death, sweeter than life, and better then wine."

AMEN.
