Movin' On Up Places

I appreciate the term "Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)" which seems more common place these days.  Goodwin House, Inc. where I've begun CPE work, is a CCRC facility.  Residents are at least 65 years 'young' when they arrive, first moving into Independent Living quarters, and have available when needed, step-up care facilities for health care needs, assisted living, and hospice.  Many residents are still very active with plenty of interests that take them out into the world.  Thankfully, GHI offers a wonderful array of personal services and interactive functions for those who do not venture out as much.  Over time, I expect I will come to know plenty about everything available, the people who offer them, and those who benefit from them.

I saw this "For Better or For Worse" comic in today's Washington Post, and of course I thougth of Goodwin House's ministry:

What I knew already about GHI is that it is one of those 'Movin' On Up Places'.  On Friday, our initial seminar day for CPE, there was an post-memorial service/interment gathering to remember a resident (the step-mother of a dear friend who works at GH Alexandria), and our Supervisor was called upstairs to respond to the death of a resident while we took our afternoon break.  All of this reminds me of the 'moving from this life to the next', and 'going from strength to strength in perfect service in our heavenly kingdom'.

It is my privilege and good fortune to have these next five months to live, learn and minister at Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads.
